Description

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a classic platform game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995. Developed and published by Nintendo, this title is notable for its innovative art design and gameplay mechanics. The player controls Yoshi, a dinosaur who must transport and protect Baby Mario through a series of varied and colorful levels.

One of the most notable features of "Yoshi's Island" is its unique visual style, inspired by hand-drawn drawings, which moves away from the pre-rendered graphics that were common at the time. This effect was achieved thanks to the Super FX2 chip built into the SNES cartridge, which allowed for advanced graphical effects such as sprite transformations and rotations, as well as zoom and distortion effects that added depth and dynamism to the gaming experience.

In terms of gameplay, "Yoshi's Island" introduces different mechanics than other games in the Mario series. Yoshi can swallow enemies and turn them into eggs, which he then uses as projectiles. Additionally, the game has no time limit on levels, allowing players to explore the worlds at their own pace. If Yoshi takes damage, Baby Mario is separated from him inside a bubble and the player must recover him before he is captured by enemies, adding an element of urgency to the gameplay.

The game was ported to the Game Boy Advance in 2002 under the title "Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island". This version included minor changes to the gameplay and added extra levels not present in the original version. Although the graphical quality was slightly lower and suffered from some slowdowns, the essence of the game remained intact. "Yoshi's Island" has subsequently been re-released on several platforms, including the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console and Wii U, as well as the SNES Classic Edition.

Over time, the game has not only been considered one of the best of the 1990s, but has also sold more than four million copies, becoming one of the SNES's last commercial successes. Its success set a standard for the Yoshi series, which has seen several spin-off games and sequels over the years. "Yoshi's Island" was the last two-dimensional game in the Mario series before the transition to 3D with "Super Mario 64."
