Doom broke into the world of consoles in 1995, two years after his bloody conquest on PC. This adaptation for SNES, a work of Sculptural Software and under the seal of Nintendo, came into the hands of the players with a proposal challenging: to capture the essence frantic shooter original and the technical limitations of the 16-bit console.
In this port, the demons pixelated presented with sprites smaller and less detailed, moving through scenes with a palette of colours is reduced. The lighting and the fog, which added depth and immersion in the PC version, were conspicuous by their absence. The original soundtrack of metal, composed by masters such as Bobby Prince and Kelly Bailey, gives way to an orchestration MIDI, while maintaining the tension, is unable to replicate the same intensity and brutality.
Despite these differences, Doom for SNES manages to preserve the gameplay as it became a point of reference. The protagonist, known as "Doomguy" or "Space Marine", makes its way through hordes of demons using an arsenal of devastating weapons, from the iconic chainsaw up the rocket launcher. Levels, although some redesigned and with enemies eliminated, maintaining the essence of the original, leading to the player by space bases infested, laboratories hell and ancient ruins.
Doom for SNES is not exempt from criticism. The graphics are simplified and the sound less impressive are the points which are often referred to as disadvantages. However, the port also has its merits. The local multiplayer mode, a feature not present in the original version, allows two players to battle in bloody games cooperative or competitive. In addition, the game maintains the fluidity and the gameplay frantic features, offering a challenging experience and entertaining despite the technical limitations.
Doom for SNES, despite their cuts graphics and sound, it became a commercial success, selling more than 800,000 copies. The fans of the game praised its faithfulness to the original and the gameplay is solid, considering it one of the best versions of Doom-consoles.
History
On the moons of Mars, a scientific basis for the Astronomical Union Universal (UAC) is infested with demons. A group of space marines, among them the protagonist known as "Doomguy", are sent to investigate, and remove the threat.
Doomguy makes its way through the facility plagued by hordes of demons, using an arsenal of weapons, brutal as shotguns, machine guns and rocket launchers. Each level presents new challenges and enemies, from imps and cacodemons to zombies and mancubuses.
The fight intensifies as Doomguy goes in the depths of the base, discovering experiments demonic and facing heads each time more powerful. The history reveals that the UAC has been conducting research dangerous on the teleportation interdimensional, opening accidentally a door to Hell.
Doomguy finally gets to the heart of the base, where it is located with the Cyberdemon, demon cyber giant that guards the portal to Hell. In an epic battle, Doomguy defeat the Cyberdemon and closes the portal, sealing the demonic invasion.
However, the victory is bittersweet. Doomguy realizes that the UAC is responsible for the invasion and decides to destroy it. Destroys the space base and escapes, leaving behind a planet Mars devastated.
