Description

Doom II for Game Boy Advance (GBA) is an adaptation of the classic first-person shooter originally developed by id Software. This portable version was released to offer the Doom experience on a mobile platform, allowing players to enjoy the game anywhere. Technically, Doom II for the GBA features graphics and sound tailored to the capabilities of the console's hardware, resulting in a slightly different experience compared to the PC version. Despite the GBA's limitations, such as a smaller screen and limited color palette, the game manages to maintain the essence of the original.

As for availability on other platforms, Doom II has had numerous reissues and ports. Originally released for DOS, the game has been ported to a variety of systems, including the Macintosh, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation 3, and more recently, modern platforms through various digital storefronts. Each version seeks to preserve the key elements that made the game a milestone in its genre, although with variations in graphics and gameplay due to hardware differences.

Improvements in later versions of Doom II include improved graphics, more levels, and the inclusion of new monsters and weapons that were not present in the original GBA version. On the other hand, some notable shortcomings in the GBA version may include a lower screen resolution and a lower frame rate per second, which affects the fluidity of the game. Additionally, due to the GBA's memory and processing power restrictions, some levels and features had to be modified or removed.

The plot of Doom II is a direct continuation of the first game, Doom. After the events on the moons of Mars, the protagonist returns to Earth only to find it invaded by the forces of hell. The game unfolds through a series of levels in which the player must fight hordes of demons to save humanity. The narrative is simple but effective, providing an exciting context for the frenetic action that characterizes the game.

History

The story of Doom 2 for the GBA begins with the protagonist's return to Earth after having saved Mars from a demonic threat. Upon arriving, he discovers that demons have invaded the planet, killing or possessing most of its inhabitants. His mission is to bring down the force field around the last operational starport to allow the remnants of humanity to escape to the stars.

The game unfolds through 30 levels, plus 2 secret levels, which form one long episode. The player navigates 3D environments from a first-person perspective, facing demons and searching for the exit by activating switches and searching for keys. Unlike its predecessor, Doom, which is divided into three episodes, Doom 2 features a continuous campaign.

Throughout the game, the player encounters new types of demons with more advanced attacks, such as the machine-gun-wielding Heavy Weapon Dudes, the skeletal Revenants that fire homing missiles, and the sinister Arch-Viles with a powerful fire attack. Additionally, the game introduces a new weapon to the player's arsenal: the super shotgun.

The ultimate goal of the game is to fight through the infested levels to reach the starport and deactivate the force field. The battle culminates in a confrontation with the Icon of Sin, a gigantic representation of evil that must be destroyed to save humanity. With each level completed, the player gets closer to this final confrontation, which will determine the fate of the Earth.
