Description

Doom, the iconic first-person shooter, was originally released in 1993 and has since been ported to a multitude of platforms. The Game Boy Advance (GBA) version, known as Doom Advance, allowed players to bring the intensity of the original game to a portable experience. This version stands out for its fidelity to the original material, despite the technical limitations of the portable console.

As for improvements, Doom for GBA presents gameplay adapted to the console controls, maintaining the essence of the classic game. However, due to hardware restrictions, some aspects such as audio quality and graphic resolution were necessarily reduced. Despite this, the game was well received for its ability to replicate the Doom experience on a portable platform.

In addition to the GBA version, Doom has been available on platforms such as Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation, SNES, Saturn and 3DO, among others. Each version sought to adapt the gaming experience to the specific capabilities of the hardware, offering players various ways to enjoy this classic.

Doom's plot is simple but effective: a space marine faces off alone against hordes of demons and zombies at a base on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. As the player progresses, the story unfolds through environments and fast-paced action, rather than through explicit narrative. This minimalist approach to narrative was revolutionary at the time and contributed to the game's immersive atmosphere.

Doom for the GBA also included a multiplayer mode, although it required each player to have their own cartridge and console. This mode offered an additional experience and extended the life of the game, allowing players to face off or cooperate on Doom's infamous maps.

In short, Doom for the GBA is a respectful adaptation of the PC classic, which manages to capture the essence of the original within the limitations of the portable console. Although it has some technical disadvantages inherent to the platform, it remains an important piece in video game history and a testament to the versatility and lasting impact of Doom.

History

The story of Doom begins on the moons of Mars, where a series of teleportation experiments conducted by the Corporate Aerospace Union (CAU) have accidentally opened a portal to hell. The player takes the role of a space marine, known as Doomguy, who is the sole survivor after infernal creatures invade the UAC bases.

The game takes place through three different episodes. In the first episode, "Knee-Deep in the Dead", Doomguy fights to survive in the Phobos base, facing a variety of demons and the infamous Baron of Hell before discovering the portal to Hell.

In the second episode, "The Shores of Hell", the Marine arrives on Deimos, the second moon of Mars, only to find that it has also been invaded by the forces of Hell. Here, the player faces new and more powerful enemies, including the Cacodemon and the Cyberdemon, while searching for a way to close the infernal portal.

The third episode, "Inferno", takes Doomguy straight to hell, where he must fight through grotesque landscapes and even more fearsome abominations. Finally, he confronts the Spider Mastermind, the mastermind behind the demonic invasion. After defeating him, Doomguy returns to Earth, only to find that it has also been invaded, setting the premise for the sequel, Doom II: Hell on Earth.

Throughout the game, the player collects various weapons, from a simple pistol to the powerful BFG 9000, and finds various power-ups that aid him in his fight against the hordes of hell. The levels are full of secrets, hidden passages, and areas that require the player to explore and retrace their steps to advance.

Doom's gameplay focuses on fast action and exploration, with an emphasis on the player's ability to move and shoot with precision. The levels are designed in such a way that the player must be constantly on the move, avoiding enemy fire and looking for the best position to counterattack.

Doom ends with the Space Marine defeating the Spider Mastermind, but the war against the forces of Hell is far from over. The story continues in Doom II, where Doomguy takes the fight against demons to Earth in an attempt to save humanity from extinction. Doom's narrative is simple but effective, providing the necessary context for an exciting and challenging gaming experience.
