Description
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a role-playing video game developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo, originally for the Game Boy Advance console. This title, released in 2003, is the first in the Mario & Luigi series and is distinguished by its gameplay that combines action elements with those of a traditional RPG. In terms of available platforms, the game was released for the Game Boy Advance, and later, an enhanced version was developed for the Nintendo 3DS under the name Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. Additionally, it is available on the Wii U Virtual Console and as part of the Nintendo Switch Online service.
Improvements to the Nintendo 3DS version include updated graphics with more vivid colors and well-defined shadows, providing greater visual depth. Characters and objects have more volume and refined details, and movements are less robotic compared to the original version. Additionally, the soundtrack was praised for its quality and for evoking nostalgia by combining previous themes from the series, although with frequent variations.
Plot-wise, the game begins in the Mushroom Kingdom, but events take the characters to the Bean Kingdom. The story focuses on Mario and Luigi, who fight Cackletta, the main antagonist who, with the help of her assistant Fawful, steals Princess Peach's voice. The game is known for its humorous tone and for featuring a variety of jokes and comedic references, maintaining an erratic style that can change drastically throughout the adventure.
The battle system is innovative for its time, focusing on synchronization between characters and creating more elaborate attacks. However, some critics noted that the lack of difficulty could indicate that the game was primarily aimed at a young audience. Despite this, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is considered one of the most fun and varied RPGs, and has left a lasting legacy in the genre. Its influence extends to several sequels and has set a standard for role-playing games within the Mario universe.
History
The story of "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga" begins in the Mushroom Kingdom, where Princess Peach receives a visit from the Kingdom's ambassador Haba and her assistant. However, this visit is a trap, and the ambassador, who is actually the witch Cackletta, along with her assistant Fawful, steal Princess Peach's voice.
Mario and Luigi, upon learning of the theft, decide to embark on a journey to the Haba Kingdom to recover Peach's voice. Throughout their adventure, the brothers face multiple challenges and meet new allies, such as Prince Judia, who has been transformed into a monster by Cackletta's evil actions.
The plot unfolds through different areas of the Haba Kingdom, where Mario and Luigi must solve puzzles, overcome obstacles and fight Cackletta's henchmen. The game's battle system is unique as it requires synchronization between brothers to execute powerful combo moves.
As the story progresses, it is revealed that Cackletta's goal is to seize the Star Bean, a source of immense power that would allow him to conquer not only the Bean Kingdom but also the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi, with the help of their new friends, manage to gather the fragments of the Star Jew before Cackletta and prepare for the final confrontation.
In the decisive battle, Cackletta, who has taken possession of Bowser's body, fights the brothers. After an intense fight, Mario and Luigi manage to defeat Cackletta and free Bowser from his control. With Peach's voice restored and peace returned to both kingdoms, the siblings return home as heroes.
The game concludes with a celebration in the Mushroom Kingdom, where Mario, Luigi, Peach, and their friends enjoy victory and restored harmony. However, there is always the promise of new adventures on the horizon for the brave brothers Mario and Luigi.
