Description
Super Mario All-Stars, known in Japan as Super Mario Collection, is a platform video game compilation released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993. This collection includes remakes of the four Super Mario games originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Famicom Disk System: Super Mario Bros. (1985), Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (1986), Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988) and Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988).
The games in this compilation feature updated graphics, including the addition of parallax scrolling, and improved music, with modified physics and a save game feature, which was not available in the original versions. These improvements took advantage of the technical capabilities of the SNES, which was more advanced than the NES in terms of hardware.
In addition to the SNES version, Super Mario All-Stars has also been available on other platforms. A special edition for the Wii was released in 2010, which included an optical disc and the ability to use different controllers such as the Wii Remote, Wii Classic Controller, and GameCube Controller. More recently, the game has been made available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
The plot of the games included in Super Mario All-Stars follows the adventures of the iconic plumber Mario and his brother Luigi, who travel through various themed worlds to rescue Princess Peach from the villain Bowser. Each game introduces different power-ups and obstacles, while maintaining the classic platform gameplay that has defined the series.
Reception of Super Mario All-Stars was generally very positive, with praise directed at the graphical and sound improvements. However, some critics pointed out the lack of innovation in terms of gameplay, as the games were essentially the same as their NES counterparts with a fresh coat of paint. Despite this, the compilation became one of the best-selling games for the SNES, with over 10 million units sold.
The inclusion of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was notable, as it was the first time this game was available outside of Japan. Upon its original release, it was considered too difficult for Western markets and was replaced by a different version of Super Mario Bros. 2.
