"Resident Evil", released in 1996 by Capcom, is a video game that marked a before and after in the survival horror genre. Initially developed for the PlayStation, its launch was on December 10, 1997 in Spain. This game introduced players to an immersive and terrifying experience, set in a mansion full of secrets on the outskirts of the fictional Raccoon City. With a combination of puzzles, exploration and combat against zombies and other monstrous creatures, "Resident Evil" not only challenged players with its gameplay, but also established a rich narrative and a deeply crafted game world.

The graphical quality of "Resident Evil" for the PS1 was notable for its time, with a graphics score of 9.4 according to a review by Vandal. Sound, another critical component in any horror game's atmosphere, received a score of 8.5, contributing significantly to the tension and fear players experienced. The gameplay was rated 7.5, reflecting the innovation and challenge of the game's controls and mechanics at the time.

The game was so well received that it became the foundation of one of the video game industry's most iconic and enduring franchises. Its success led to multiple sequels, adaptations and remakes, expanding the "Resident Evil" universe and its legacy in popular culture. The original PS1 version is especially valued by fans for its authenticity and for being the one that established the foundations of the series.

The narrative of "Resident Evil" is complex and full of unexpected twists. Players take control of one of two playable characters, Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, members of the elite S.T.A.R.S. team, sent to investigate a series of strange murders on the outskirts of the city. What they discover at the mansion is a conspiracy involving illegal biological experiments and the creation of biological weapons that have led to a plague of zombies and mutants.

The level design of "Resident Evil" is intricate, with a mansion that functions as a maze full of traps, puzzles and secrets. Every room, hallway, and corner is meticulously designed to keep players on high alert. Enemies are varied and each presents a unique challenge, from basic zombies to fearsome hunters and the iconic Tyrant.

As for gameplay, "Resident Evil" introduced mechanics that would become hallmarks of the genre, such as limited inventory management, scarce save points, and health recoverable only through specific items. These mechanics increased the tension and strategy needed to advance through the game. Additionally, the game featured multiple endings, which added significant replay value and encouraged players to explore all narrative possibilities.

The cultural impact of "Resident Evil" is indisputable. It has inspired a series of films, novels, comics, and a host of merchandise. Additionally, it has influenced countless games within and outside of the horror genre, setting a standard for narrative and atmosphere in video games. The series has evolved over time, but the original PS1 entry remains a timeless classic that gamers continue to discover and appreciate today.
