Description
Excitebike developed and published by Nintendo. Originally released for the Famicom in Japan in 1984 and for the NES in North America in 1985, the game was noted for its gameplay and innovative track design mode. In Excitebike, players control a motorcyclist with the goal of overcoming obstacles and competitors to reach the goal in the shortest time possible. The gameplay focuses on the balance between speed and managing the temperature of the engine, which can overheat if the turbo is abused.
The game offers two main modes: Selection A, which is a solo race for the best time, and Selection B, where you compete against other computer-controlled racers. Additionally, the design mode allows players to create their own tracks, which added a dimension of customization and replayability to the title. Although this mode did not allow the tracks created to be saved once the console was turned off, it represented a significant advance in user interactivity with the video game.
Over the years, Excitebike has been re-released and adapted for various platforms, including the Wii, Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, as well as part of the selection of pre-installed games on the Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System. These versions have maintained the essence of the original game, while in some cases improvements have been made to image quality and compatibility with new game systems.
Plot-wise, Excitebike doesn't have a story in the traditional sense, as it focuses on the action and competition of motocross racing. However, the simplicity of its premise and the intensity of its gameplay have contributed to it becoming a timeless classic. Excitebike's influence extends beyond its own title, as the side-scrolling game engine developed for this game was later used in the creation of Super Mario Bros., one of the most influential video games of all time.
