Description
A signature title in the survival horror game series, Resident Evil Gaiden was released for the Game Boy Color (GBC) and marked a departure in the franchise with its top-down perspective and first-person combat. Developed by M4 and published by Capcom, the game features iconic characters Leon S. Kennedy and Barry Burton on a mission to stop the Umbrella corporation on a zombie-infested luxury cruise ship.
The gameplay of Resident Evil Gaiden is distinguished by two main modes: the top-view "exploration mode" and the first-person "full screen battle mode", offering a unique experience in the series. With more than 100 rooms spread over 4 decks and a submarine, the game invites players to discover 11 stunning settings while collecting and using more than 100 items, including 7 weapons and 3 types of armor. Intelligent enemies in the game are able to detect the player through sight, smell, and different fields of vision, adding a level of strategy and tension to the gameplay experience.
As for the plot, Resident Evil Gaiden focuses on Barry Burton's mission to rescue Leon S. Kennedy and stop a new bio-organic weapon developed by Umbrella. The story takes place on the ocean liner STARLIGHT, where players face a horde of passengers turned into zombies. The narrative also introduces Lucia, a new character who accompanies Barry and who has the ability to witness the presence of the bio-organic weapon.
Despite being a unique entry in the series, Resident Evil Gaiden has received mixed reviews, with some praising its attempt to innovate within the limitations of the GBC platform, while others criticizing its departure from the classic Resident Evil formula. Nevertheless, the game is a collector's item for fans and an interesting curiosity in the history of survival horror games.
Resident Evil Gaiden has not been re-released on other platforms, remaining exclusive to the GBC. This is partly due to its mixed reception and significant differences in gameplay and style compared to other titles in the series. However, it remains a notable example of how the Resident Evil series has explored different approaches and styles of gameplay over the years, maintaining its place in gaming culture as a franchise that isn't afraid to experiment and evolve.
For those interested in video game history and the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil Gaiden offers a unique perspective and a different challenge worth exploring. Although it may not be available on modern platforms, its legacy continues through the community of fans and collectors who appreciate its place in the evolution of survival horror games.
