Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (UMK3) came to the Mega Drive in 1997 as a substantial upgrade of Mortal Kombat 3, bringing with it new characters, scenes, movements, and game modes. UMK3 increases the number of playable characters to 23, including fighters hidden as Motaro, Shao Kahn, and classic characters like Mileena and Ermac in their original versions. This variety of characters offers a range of combat styles and strategies to explore.

The game introduces new scenarios iconic as the lair of Shao Kahn and the Living Forest, in addition to additional game modes such as Endurance, where the players must face waves of enemies, and the mode Tournament, 8 players.

UMK3 refines the gameplay of Mortal Kombat 3 with the introduction of new special moves, combos and fatalities, including the "babalities", a kind of fatality comedian. In addition, it implements a system of locking deeper and making adjustments in the balance of the characters.

The version of the Mega Drive of UMK3 is considered as one of the best conversions of the original game, praised for its faithfulness to the arcade experience right and for their own improvements: The inclusion of new characters and scenarios expands the replayability and variety of the game. The additional game modes such as Endurance and Tournament offer new experiences of combat. The improvements in the locking system, the new moves and fatalities enrich the gameplay.

However, it also has some disadvantages: compared to versions for other platforms, the graphics of the Mega Drive can be a bit pixelated and with less detail. The sound quality may be inferior to the other versions, especially in music.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for the Mega Drive, in spite of its small drawbacks, it stands as an experience of ultimate fight in the console.
