Description

Mortal Kombat II burst onto the Mega Drive in 1993, a year after his debut arcade. Developed by Midway and published by Acclaim, this version for the 16-bit console Sega brought with it an explosion of new graphics, sound and gameplay that catapulted him to the top of the genre.

The version of the Mega Drive Mortal Kombat II stands out for its graphics, digitized improved, with sprites larger and more detailed than provide a visual experience that is more impactful. The audio is also experiencing a major leap forward, with sound effects more clear and a soundtrack memorable composed by Adrenalin.

Mortal Kombat II for the Mega Drive introduces a new selection of wrestlers, including Jax Briggs, Sub-Zero and Kitana, bringing the total to 12 playable characters. In addition, we incorporate new special moves, combos and fatalities, expanding the possibilities of strategic combat.

Like its predecessor, Mortal Kombat II has been adapted to a wide range of platforms throughout the years: Arcade, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Game Boy, DOS, Sega CD, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch.

The version of the Mega Drive Mortal Kombat II is considered as one of the best conversions of the original game, praised for its faithfulness to the arcade experience right and by its own upgrades:

Graphics: sprites digitized improved and the wider palette of colors provide a visual experience that is richer and more attractive. The soundtrack composed by Adrenalin and the effects of sound sharper create an atmosphere more immersive. The incorporation of new characters, moves and fatalities expands the strategic possibilities, and the fun of combat.

However, it also presents some of the differences that have been the subject of debate. The response of the controls on the Mega Drive can be less precise than in the arcade version, especially on special moves complexes. Some versions of Mortal Kombat II for the Mega Drive, suffered censorship in certain movements and fatalities, taking some of the graphic violence that characterised the original game.

History

The history of Mortal Kombat II develops a year after the events of the first game. Shang Tsung, the evil sorcerer of Outworld, has been defeated by Liu Kang, the champion of the Earth. However, Shang Tsung has not died and has been resurrected by his master, the supreme god of Outworld, Shao Kahn.

Shao Kahn, furious at the defeat of Shang Tsung, he decides to take action in the matter. His plan is to invade Earth and enslave its population. To do this, organizes a new Mortal Kombat tournament, this time with the intention of ten warriors of Outworld to defeat the ten representatives of the Earth. If Outworld wins, Shao Kahn will be able to invade the Earth without restrictions.

Liu Kang, once more, is chosen to lead the team of the Earth. Next to him are some of the winners of the previous tournament, as Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Sub-Zero, as well as new warriors as Jax Briggs, Kitana and Mileena.

In the tournament, the warriors of the Earth is facing a new and powerful opponents of Outworld, as Baraka, Kintaro and Sheeva. In addition to fighting, the heroes must deal with the intrigues and betrayals within their own team.

After passing all the tests, Liu Kang and the other warriors of the Earth face the own Shao Kahn in a final battle. The fight is epic and hard-fought, but in the end, Liu Kang emerges victorious, defeating once again the evil god and save the Earth from invasion.

The victory of Liu Kang brings peace to the Earth, for a time. However, Shao Kahn is not willing to surrender. Vowing revenge, he promises to return and conquer the Earth in the future. The history of Mortal Kombat II ends with a final hopeful, but with the shadow of the threat of Shao Kahn hangs over the future of the Earth.
